Amateur career
Allotey had a successful amateur career, winning the Ghanaian national featherweight title in 1981 and 1982. He also represented Ghana at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where he was eliminated in the second round.
Professional career
Allotey turned professional in 1985 and quickly rose through the ranks. He won his first 18 fights, including a victory over future world champion Azumah Nelson. In 1992, Allotey suffered his first loss, a knockout defeat to Eusebio Pedroza. However, he rebounded with a string of victories and eventually earned a shot at the WBA Featherweight title in 1997.
Allotey defeated Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. to win the WBA Featherweight title in 1997. He successfully defended his title once before losing it to Freddie Norwood in 1998. Allotey continued to fight until 2002, but he never again won a world title.
Retirement
Allotey retired from boxing in 2002 with a record of 39-9-1 (23 KOs). He is considered one of the greatest boxers from Ghana and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2008.
