Early Life and Career
Adamu was born in Accra, Ghana. He began boxing at the age of 12, and he quickly showed a natural talent for the sport. He won several amateur tournaments in Ghana, and he eventually turned professional in 2006.
Professional Career
Adamu’s professional career got off to a fast start. He won his first 10 fights, and he quickly became a contender for the Ghanaian middleweight title. He won the title in 2009, and he defended it three times before vacating it in 2012 to pursue a world title.
Adamu’s first world title opportunity came in 2014, when he fought for the WBA (Regular) middleweight title against Gennady Golovkin. Golovkin was the heavy favorite, but Adamu put up a spirited fight. He knocked Golovkin down in the seventh round, but he was eventually stopped in the ninth round.
After his loss to Golovkin, Adamu took some time off from boxing. He returned to the ring in 2018, and he has since won four fights in a row. In 2021, he fought for the vacant WBA (Regular) middleweight title against Danny Jacobs. Adamu won the fight by unanimous decision, and he became the first Ghanaian boxer to win a world title since 1988.
